The Real Cost of Living in Cities Like Surat Today

Urban centers such as Surat have always been perceived as cheaper alternatives to metropolitan cities; however, this is gradually becoming untrue with time. Due to the high rate of urbanization, high rents, and lifestyle costs, the cost of living continues to increase day by day. Starting from small expenses such as groceries to more significant investments in terms of education, homeownership, among others, the cost of living has become a serious issue for many inhabitants.

Cost of Housing: Rent, Real Estate Value, and the Issue of Urbanization

Of all the expenses, housing is by far the largest cost incurred by those who live in Surat. Not too long back, it would be easy to find good quality 1BHK/2BHK apartments that are rented out at a fair price, but the situation has changed considerably. With the development of the city and increased movement of people due to work or business opportunities, there has been a sharp rise in the demand for rentals. Places that used to offer good prices have experienced an increase in rates on a constant basis. Moreover, even when purchasing property, one needs to pay much more in comparison to before. This has led to an increase in the cost of maintenance and property taxes, forcing one to spend beyond one’s means.

Expense Categories on a Daily Basis By Food Transport Utilities And Lifestyle

Daily expenses in Surat can appear to be quite reasonable at first; however, when you look at the overall picture over 30 days, these costs add up! One of the biggest contributors to higher grocery bills is inflation; this has affected many of the everyday items that we buy. Eating out as a way of life is also very expensive when you think about it, unless you have control over your budget! Transportation costs vary greatly depending on your mode of transportation; if you take public transportation, take auto rickshaws, or drive a private vehicle — the price for fuel, maintenance, insurance, registration fees etc., all of which can slowly deplete your savings. Lastly, fixed monthly costs such as: electricity, water, internet services & cellular phone charging all contribute towards an increased monthly expense budget. Other things you may spend on each month, such as: subscription services, gym memberships or social events, increase your monthly expenses too. Collectively, none of these expenses are exceedingly high; however, together they can place significant strain on your finances.

Income vs. Expenditure: Are costs rising but income levels in Surat are keeping pace?

The main question facing Surat today is whether income in the city has risen enough to support the growing number of building expenses for housing and the high cost of living. Although Surat has a wealth of employment options such as textiles, diamonds and small businesses, the increase in salaries has not always kept pace with rising businesses’ overhead costs.

For many young professionals, building savings is also becoming increasingly difficult due to a large portion of their salaries being put towards rent, daily living expenses, and/or basic necessities. Furthermore, many middle-class earners are finding it increasingly challenging without taking careful financial considerations, to maintain the same standard of living as they had just a few years ago.

The notion that Surat is a “cheap place to live” is changing rapidly with the acceptance of this life, however, more than larger cities are periodically becoming less expensive to live in, which means the need for budgeting, additional income streams, and good financial discipline will be greater than at any other time in the past few years.

Hidden Costs of Urban Living: Healthcare, Education, and Unexpected Expenses

Aside from typical monthly expenses, living in a city like Surat has many hidden costs that are often overlooked by people. Some of the largest hidden costs of living in a city are related to health care. Medical emergencies and normal medical care can be expensive, especially in private hospitals. In addition to health care expenses, education can be one of the largest costs of living in a city, mainly for families with children. Educational expenses continue to rise with school fees, tuition, and extracurricular costs. In addition to these two major expenses, there are many other unexpected expenses, such as home repairs, vehicle maintenance, and sudden social obligations to attend weddings and festivals. These types of expenses will not happen every month, but when they do occur, they can have an adverse effect on your budget. According to most people, they fail to realize how much these types of irregular expenses will affect their overall finances. These expenses build up over time and increase the cost of living in a city significantly beyond what it appears to be on the surface. Budgeting for these hidden expenses is critical to prevent financial problems.

Conclusion

Being in the city like Surat isn’t as easy and cheap anymore as it used to be previously. However, even with an increased price of the life in general, living in Surat remains better than any other metro city. At this point, money management demands from people much greater attention and awareness than ever before. It is important not only to earn well but know how to manage one’s finances properly in order to lead a stable lifestyle.
