Why SoftBank Thinks Space-Based AI Data Centres Are Not the Future

With the rise of AI technology, tech companies are looking at constructing even more large-scale data centers to meet increasing computing requirements. Why Masayoshi Son of SoftBank Does Not Believe in It

While Elon Musk sees potential in orbital AI systems, SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son is strongly against it. At a recent shareholder meeting, Son doubted the value of setting up data centers in outer space. As he put it, the main benefit that was usually brought up – reduced electricity costs – does not really mean anything when compared to the tremendous cost of such an endeavor. As Masayoshi Son puts it, electricity makes just a minor part of the total cost of running AI infrastructure – while complex hardware and maintenance are much more expensive. Moreover, setting up vast amount of hardware in space is going to be incredibly expensive itself. Besides, it will bring many new problems like maintenance, upgrades, latency, and reliability. Masayoshi Son stresses out that it is crucial to concentrate on the opportunities right now, rather than work on some project which would take decades to implement. Companies which will increase their computing capacity on Earth quickly will get a bigger competitive advantage compared to the companies which spend much money on speculative space technologies.

Growing Race to Build AI Infrastructure on Earth

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence technologies has led to the emergence of a serious global race to build data centers and computer facilities.
